A walk-in cooler holds most of a kitchen's inventory, so a warm box is a business problem, not just an equipment problem. We repair walk-in coolers for restaurants, grocery and convenience stores, breweries, schools and churches across Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Nampa, Caldwell and Kuna, and we answer the phone 24/7. Walk-in work is a core part of our commercial refrigeration repair service.
We look at the whole system (the box, the door, the evaporator inside and the condensing unit outside) because the part that failed is not always the part that caused the failure.
The cooler is holding at 45°F or climbing. Causes range from a dirty condenser coil or failed condenser fan to a compressor that will not start, a bad contactor, or a low refrigerant charge.
A solid block of ice on the coil inside the box. Usually caused by moist air getting in, a failed evaporator fan motor, a low charge or a defrost setting that does not match how the box is used.
Torn gaskets, sagging hinges, broken self-closers, failed door heaters and bad door switches. Small problems at the door cause most of the frost and long run times we see.
Rooftop and pad-mounted condensing units that short cycle, trip on high pressure, run constantly or make new noises. We check electrical, airflow, pressures and the compressor itself.
A box that slowly loses its ability to hold temperature over weeks is often leaking. We locate the leak with electronic detection and bubble testing, repair it, and recharge to spec instead of topping off and leaving.
Alarms going off overnight or during deliveries. We sort out whether it is a real failure, a long defrost, poor sensor placement or a control problem.
A walk-in that has stopped cooling usually holds temperature longer than people expect, as long as the door stays closed. The steps on this list protect your product and make the repair go faster.
When you call, tell us the box temperature, whether the fans inside are running, whether the condensing unit outside is running, and whether you see ice on the coil. That is often enough to know which parts to bring.
Summer is when most walk-in coolers fail here. Condensing units on Treasure Valley rooftops sit in triple-digit heat, and late spring cottonwood fluff mats condenser coils shut. A coil that was "fine" in April can push head pressure high enough to trip the unit by July. A spring coil cleaning is one of the most effective things you can do for a walk-in.
Winter brings the opposite problem. Outdoor condensing units without proper low-ambient controls can struggle to keep pressures up when it gets cold, and doors that see a lot of traffic let dry outside air meet a cold, wet box. If your walk-in only acts up at one time of year, that is useful information. Tell us when you call.
Walk-in brands we commonly service include Kolpak and Norlake boxes, along with Heatcraft and Copeland condensing units, plus most other commercial walk-ins and refrigeration systems you will find in Treasure Valley kitchens and stores.
For a deeper look at how walk-in systems work and what fails, see our walk-in cooler and freezer field manual. If your problem is a freezer rather than a cooler, our walk-in freezer repair page covers defrost and ice buildup in more detail.

"Tech that came out was quick and very knowledgeable in fixing our commercial freezer. Had another company that came out before them that thought they fixed and did not. I will use this company moving forward and you should too. They came all the way to Ontario oregon, and was quick in response."
"The technician Chris was really great to work with. Their prices are extremely competitive. Worth having them checkout any issues you may be having. Not to mention they're very honest. Thanks guys."
Common questions from kitchen and store managers
Confirm the door is fully closed and the strip curtain is in place, check that the evaporator fans inside the box are running, and look at the coil for heavy ice. Outside, make sure the condensing unit is running and its coil is not packed with cottonwood fluff or dirt, and check the breaker. If none of that explains it, call us and keep the door shut while you wait.
Ice on a cooler coil is a symptom, not the problem. Common causes are a door left ajar or a torn gasket letting humid air in, a failed evaporator fan motor, a low refrigerant charge from a leak, or an incorrect defrost setting. We melt the coil down, find the cause and fix it so it does not come back the next day.
Keep the door closed as much as possible, since every opening dumps cold air. Log the box temperature and the time so you have a record for food safety decisions. If the box is climbing toward 41°F, move the most sensitive items (dairy, proteins, prepared foods) into reach-ins or a working walk-in first. Do not prop the door open or pile product in front of the evaporator.
Yes. Torn or flattened gaskets, worn hinges, broken self-closers, failed door heaters and bad door switches all let warm, moist air into the box. Door hardware problems are one of the most common causes of iced coils and long run times, and they are usually inexpensive to correct compared to the energy and product they cost.
An alarm means the box went outside its set range, but not why. It can be a defrost cycle that ran long, a door left open during a delivery, or a real refrigeration failure. Check the door and the current temperature, then call us if the box is not recovering. We can also look at alarm and thermostat placement if you are getting nuisance alarms.
Yes. We service walk-in coolers throughout the Treasure Valley, including Meridian, Eagle, Star, Kuna, Nampa and Caldwell. Call any time, day or night, and we will let you know when a tech can be there.
Call any time, day or night. Walk-in failures get priority dispatch, and we offer 2-hour emergency response. Once it is fixed, ask about a maintenance plan that keeps coils clean and door hardware in shape before summer.
Response times can vary with location, weather and call volume.
